Pedro Almodóvar's remarkable body of work embraces melodrama, screwball comedy, noir and sci-fi, all worked through with a magical imagination that has produced a genre all of its own - it's what the Cuban writer Guillermo Cabrera Infante termed Almodrama.

Starting on Friday, Dec 30th, O Cinema Miami Beach will embark on a week long retrospective featuring many of the director's best-loved films such Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), All about My Mother (1999) and Volver (2006) among others and will culminate with the release of his 20th feature, Julieta (2016) which opens at O Cinema Miami Beach on Jan 6th.

As 2016 comes to an end and 2017 arrives, we're excited to revisit some of Almodovar's most beloved films back on the big screen in glorious new digital restorations that come to Miami fresh from there premieres at the British Film Institute and New York's Museum of Modern Art earlier this year.

Winner of the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, All About My Mother is the story of a woman and her circle of friends who find themselves suffering a variety of emotional crises.

All About My Mother is a poignant masterpiece of unconditional love, survival and redemption. Manuela (Cecilia Roth) is the perfect mother. A hard-working nurse, she's built a comfortable life for herself and her teenage son, an aspiring writer. But when tragedy strikes and her beloved only child is killed in a car accident, her world crumbles. The heartbroken woman learns her son's final wish was to know his father - the man she abandoned when she was pregnant 18 years earlier. Returning to Barcelona in search of him, Manuela overcomes her grief and becomes caregiver to a colorful [object]ed family: a pregnant nun (Penélope Cruz), a transvestite prostitute (Antonia San Juan), and two troubled actresses (Marisa Paredes and Candela Peña). With riveting performances, unforgettable characters and creative plot twists, this touching screwball melodrama is an absolute stunner. A funny, touching and vital film.

Melding melodrama with screwball farce, this Academy Award-nominated black comedy was Pedro Almodóvar's international breakthrough and secured his place at the vanguard of modern Spanish cinema. Continuing the auteur's exploration of the female psyche, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown tells the story of Pepa-played by the director's frequent collaborator Carmen Maura-who resolves to kill herself with a batch of sleeping-pill-laced gazpacho after her lover leaves her. Fortunately, she is interrupted by a deliciously chaotic series of events. The filmmaker channeled Hollywood inspiration into his own unique vision, arriving at the irreverent humor and vibrant visual sense that define his work today. With an exceptional ensemble cast that also includes Antonio Banderas and Rossy de Palma, this film shows an artist in total control of his craft.

The story is at once hysterical and mundane, founded in abuse, rape, murder and corpse disposal yet ultimately about none of these so much as the endurance of those involved. Penélope Cruz stars as Raimunda, a working wife and mom holding down several jobs to support her adolescent daughter Paula. She also makes regular trips back to her home village with her sister Sole (Lola Dueñas) to tend their mother's grave and visit their aged aunt. But when Raimunda's husband suddenly dies and Sole starts receiving ghostly visitations from their mum (Maura), both have to learn to live with death and the practical as well as emotional challenges it brings.

In one of the most gorgeous images in Volver, white blossoms into crimson as a sheet of kitchen towel saturates with blood. Housework here is murder and a woman's work is never done - not after killing, not even after dying. Almodóvar has long been interested in the varied terrain of 'women's troubles' and in Volver he returns to many of the concerns of his earlier work, offering another fable of long-suffering drudgery overcome by domestic homicide and the whiff of quotidian magic and bodily odors. It's one of several returns to which the title - meaning 'coming back' - refers, along with the road from Madrid to ancestral La Mancha, the irruption of the past into the present and Almodóvar's professional reunion with Carmen Maura for the first time since 1987's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.

Who but Pedro Almodóvar would make a movie in which a nightclub singer named Yolanda, whose boyfriend has died from a heroin overdose, hides from the police in a nunnery--only to discover that the nuns have more perverse lifestyles than her own? The nuns of 
Dark Habits use drugs, write lurid pulp novels, design high-fashion habits, and keep a tiger in their courtyard.Yolanda (Cristina Sanchez Pascual) gets caught up in the head nun's scheme to regain the patronage of a wealthy noblewoman, but betrayal, illicit love, and a campy musical number are waiting in the wings. 

Wildly funny, bitchy, affecting and surreal, Dark Habits is evidence of Almodovar's perennial warmth and wit. The whole thing winds up with the inevitable scandal and is almost completely silly; but as ever, Almodóvar's adoration of his female stars is heart-warming, and his visual style a delight.

Almodóvar ditches gender-bending, drug-abusing anarchy for a more sober meditation on the importance of family. Newsreader Rebecca (Abril) is obsessed by her glamorous pop singer mother (Paredes), who left her as a child. The reunion after 15 years is difficult, not least because Rebecca has married her mother's old boyfriend; and when he is murdered, suspicion alights on them both. The performances are superb, with a raw emotion that is uncomfortably voyeuristic to watch.

High Heels was nominated for several Goya Awards as well as the Best Foreign Language Film at the 1992 Golden Globes and features Spanish pop star Miguel Bose.

Jealousy between an estranged mother and daughter, a love triangle, murder and a fertile drag queen/sometimes judge, all have the making for a classic Almodovar melodrama.

Described by some as Almodóvar's most open, unadorned, emotive and maybe even courageous film,
The Flower of My Secret is an intimate portrait of pain and regeneration that strikes the heart without trickery. 

Paredes is immensely sympathetic as Leo, a forty-something writer of romantic fiction who hits crisis point when she's rejected by her absentee husband and finds she's trapped by her reputation when she tries to expand her literary horizons. Although she's supported by Angel, cultural editor of El País, the constant bickering between her mother and sister doesn't help matters; a trip home to her native village in La Mancha proves, however, an unlikely source of solace. Rarely has Almodóvar focused so closely on a single character, and the challenge of developing an individual portrait has reconnected him with the emotional realities of an everyday damaged life, where loneliness, professional frustration and the irritation and commitment that permeate family relationships are observed with perceptiveness, honesty and the usual incisive humor.

A landmark in foreign queer cinema, this comic thriller concerns a love triangle between three men and a one night stand that leads to terrible consequences.

Law of Desire is a lush, overblown, steamy, tragi-comedy murder thriller set in Madrid, there's something to offend and delight everyone. It opens intercutting between the filming, dubbing and première of one of fictional director/writer Pablo Quintero's homo-erotic movies. Pablo leaves the first-night party without his quasi-lover, Juan, who's straight and loves him dearly, but... desire's off his menu. Pablo sends Juan to the country to put distance between them, and a handsome stranger, Antonio, obsessed by the director, makes his move to fill the gap. Actress Tina, the director's sex-changed brother (the stupendous Carmen Maura), now a lesbian, has her own problems to deal with including her lover's precocious daughter. Pablo, Tina and Antonio take up their themes in a passionate fugue which accelerates fast. Wit, sex, drugs and topsy-turvy clichés abound; Almodóvar's sensuous style carries all before him. Starring a young Antonio Banderas, Law of Desire is nothing if not a life-affirming joy.

Julieta lives in Madrid with her daughter Antía. They both suffer in silence over the loss of Xoan, Antía's father and Julieta's husband. But at times grief doesn't bring people closer, it drives them apart. 

When Antía turns eighteen she abandons her mother, without a word of explanation. Julieta looks for her in every possible way, but all she discovers is how little she knows of her daughter.

JULIETA is about the mother's struggle to survive uncertainty. It also about fate, about guilt complexes and about that unfathomable mystery that leads us to abandon the people we love, erasing them from our lives as if they had never meant anything, as if they had never existed.

Grand in scope but intimate in execution, it's a film you will be unable to forget.

After the death of his older brother Joe, Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked that Joe has made him sole guardian of his teenage nephew Patrick.

Lee Chandler is a brooding, irritable loner who works as a handyman for a Boston apartment block. One damp winter day he gets a call summoning him to his hometown, north of the city. His brother's heart has given out suddenly, and he's been named guardian to his 16-year-old nephew. As if losing his only sibling and doubts about raising a teenager weren't enough, his return to the past re-opens an unspeakable tragedy.

Casey Affleck's astonishing performance captures all the substance and crumbling complexity of Lee-a guy frozen in anguish and barely holding it together-who must now step beyond self-imposed isolation to connect with his nephew. Writer-director Kenneth Lonergan (You Can Count On Me) masterfully depicts human brokenness and the possibility of transformation through subtle, small moments between characters. There are no quick fixes in the working-class New England town of Manchester-by-the-Sea, just the imperfect struggle to meet loss with integrity and decency, day by day.
